How to Improve Fluency With Listening to Books on Tape

Audio books are a useful tool for foreign language learners, as they enable listeners to practice skills that book reading or class activities can't develop. When listening to a story from a tape, you have to pay attention to catch all the information, since going back to spot a specific detail is practically impossible. In addition, readers can listen to native speakers talk in various circumstances (for example casual conversations or tense exchanges) and develop an understanding of the correct pronunciation.

Instructions

    • 1

Replay parts containing words or phrases you have problems pronouncing. Memorize the speakers' voices and try to imitate them. For example, replay parts where British characters talk about a "village," and try to say the word exactly as they do, even if you have to change your voice slightly.

    • 2

Ask a friend or relative who has listened to the story (or read the printed book) to ask you specific questions, relating to the plot, the characters or the setting. This way, you can test your listening comprehension.

    • 3

Figure out the meaning of words you are uncertain about by the context. This technique will help you during conversations when you can't --- or don't want to --- interrupt the speaker. For example, in an audio book you may hear "they fractured my jaw" and another character remarking later "they broke his jaw," helping you realize that the verbs fracture and break are synonyms.

    • 4

Write down words or phrases completely new to you and search for their meanings in a dictionary. For informal phrases, used primarily in friendly chats, try entering the phrase on an online search engine. Search for English slang words and phrases at Urban Dictionary (www.urbandictionary.com).

    • 5

Summarize the story or parts of it with friends or relatives as part of a casual conversation. When summarizing a text, you can take notes, make an outline and then compose the summary. However, describing a story you listened to requires the ability to recall information quickly and maintain a confident speech flow with no written materials to help you.
