Glass Cutting & Shaping Tools

Special glass-cutting tools aid in achieving desired dimensions of glass. Glass-shaping tools bring out a fine finish of the glass you are cutting. However, you can use a glass-shaping tool as a cutting tool, and vice versa, depending on the size and thickness of the glass.
  1. Pistol Grip Glass Cutter

    • A glass cutter is for making longer precision cuts. This tool allows you to break the score line of the glass material you are cutting using a carbide wheel attached at the tool's head. Some grip glass cutters have oil boxes in which glass cutting oil is filled; this modifies the tool to allow you cut glass without physically touching the oil or any other fluid you are using.

    Mosaic Glass Cutters

    • A mosaic glass cutter easily cuts through thin pieces of glass or strips. This tool features a pair of wheels fitted with glass-cutting carbide. Use oil to stain the glass surface before using the glass cutter. A hex wrench is included in the cutter to turn the wheel to a new surface for cutting.

    Kiln

    • Shaping glass requires a low-fire kiln, which is effective in fixing glass jewelry into a metal surface. Kilns are gas powered, electric or small units of microwave ovens that amplify heat from a heat source. Kilns achieve temperatures higher than convectional microwaves.

    Breaking Plies and Glass Grinders

    • Breaking plies are available in several different sizes. Each size of the breaking plies is for breaking a given thickness of glass as you shape the glass. Glass grinders use spinning cylinders at the edge of flat glass surfaces to shape pieces of stained glass. Glass grinders use different engines depending on the thickness of and required speed needed for the glass being worked on.
