Sign up for a partner in an online language exchange, such as My Language Exchange or iTalki. These services are free. You will meet with someone who wants to learn your language and who speaks English on the Internet. You will help that person learn your language by offering tips and suggestions while the other person does the same for you in English. You will meet over voice and text chat and will thus have a chance to learn both written and spoken English from a native English speaker.
Listen to the radio or watch videos in English. Also listen to radio stations in English online. The Voice of America and the BBC both offer special English language learning news websites with both audio and written transcripts of news stories. They also offer other English language learning activities on their websites to help you improve your English. Sites with video English language lessons include the English Media Lab and ESL Video.
Take English grammar quizzes online to help improve your sentence structure. These quizzes are interactive, and they provide immediate feedback so you can quickly see the areas in which you need to improve. One site that offers English grammar quizzes is a4esl.org.
Make it a habit to speak in English, even if it is only to yourself, for at least two to three minutes a day to start out. As you become more confident in your ability to find the correct words you want to say, speak longer in English. Speak English with a family member or a friend to help you improve as well.
Write down new words you hear on the radio or in online programs in English. Build your vocabulary by looking up the words in a dictionary. Write sentences using the new grammar points you have learned as well as the new vocabulary. Ask a native English speaker to correct your sentences to help improve your writing.
Attend English classes in your community if they are available. If you live in the United States, adult education centers or nonprofit organizations in your area may offer English language lessons for free. You may also be paired with an English language tutor to help you improve specific aspects of your English. Intercambio, a nonprofit organization based in Boulder, Colorado, for example, offers both group classes and private volunteer tutors. Students of this organization have to pay a small fee for their instruction, however. Another option is to take online English language lessons. Several companies offer online English language lessons with native English speakers, and some private tutors can be found on the ESL Teachers Board website.
