The Anseriformes family include the still-living duck and geese, but the birds extinct in this species are many. They include the pink-headed duck, the Amsterdam Island duck, the Labrador duck, the Korean crusted shelduck, the Auckland Island merganser and the reunion shelduck.
A number of bird species in the Charadriiformes family have also gone extinct. The Charadriiformes are small to medium-sized birds that typically live near water. The extinct Charadriiformes include the Eskimo curlew, Javanese lapwing, North Island snipe, South Island snipe, great auk and Canarian black oyestercatcher.
The Gruiformes consist of cranes and their relatives, and embody the largest number of extinct birds. Among the extinct birds in the crane family are the Wake Island rail, red rail, Saint Helena crake, Hawaiian rail, New Caledonia swamp hen, Tristan moorhen, Mascarene coot, North Island takahe and Tahiti rail.
The Columbiformes, or doves and pigeon family, also embodies an extensive list of birds that are now extinct. Among these are the passenger pigeon, Bonin wood pigeon, reunion pink pigeon, Liverpool pigeon, Rodrigues turtle dove, Sulu bleeding-heart, Norfolk Island ground dove, thick-billed ground dove, Negros fruit dove and the dodo.
The Psittaciformesm, or parrot family, has lost many birds due to predators and change of habitat. Among these are the paradise parrot, Seychelles parakeet, Thirioux's grey parrot, Norfolk Island kaka, broad-billed parrot, Cuban red macaw, Guadeloupe parakeet and Guadeloupe amazon.
