The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is a conservation group in Canada that specializes in protecting its local environment. CPAWS helps create underwater protected areas called parks, where sea creatures can exist safely without the influence of humans. This protects many creatures including endangered species such as whales. These parks allow CPAWS to study endangered species in their own environments and learn more about them. Ecosystems are strengthened by protected areas and human understanding.
Greenpeace is a global, independent environmental organization. Greenpeace's main focus is the protection of the ocean and its creatures. Overfishing damages the food supplies of endangered species and their environments, and Greenpeace is working to stop this. Greenpeace protests oil drilling at sea because it can create oil spills that kill endangered animals. Due to Greenpeace, many American restaurants and grocers are no longer selling at-risk and endangered species of fish.
Located along the California coast, the Marine Mammal Center is a wildlife preserve at sea. At the center's lab, animals are studied and cared for when injured. Endangered species such as the Guadalupe fur seal, southern sea otters, hooker sea lions and Mediterranean monk seal have been protected by the information gathered by the Marine Mammal Center. The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species the Marine Mammal Center is studying and attempting to save.
The World Wildlife Fund is an international organization aimed at protecting wildlife around the world. Surviving on donations from members, the WWF works around the globe to protect endangered animals on land and sea. The flatback turtle, green turtle, Kemp's ridley turtle, and Olive ridley turtle are endangered due to overfishing of their food, climate change and loss of habitats. Many species of sea turtles are becoming extinct, and the WWF is working to save them.
