While some might find employment with a bachelor's degree in a related field (like education or a specific subject area) plus specialized training, a master's degree is increasingly the standard for TVIs. This master's degree will usually be in Special Education with a concentration or specialization in Visual Impairments.
The master's program will include coursework on:
* Braille reading and writing
* Assistive technology for the visually impaired
* Orientation and mobility skills
* Curriculum adaptation
* Low vision techniques
* The various causes and effects of visual impairments
* Working with students with multiple disabilities
In addition to the degree, you will usually need to pass state-specific licensing or certification exams.
