What Are Storage Compartments in Science?

The word science encompasses everything from biology to computers. Thus, when discussing storage compartments in science, a variety of such compartments exist. Each part of science uses storage for future use. This can mean storing energy, water, needed materials and even information. All of these compartments work to further the goal of the project or life form.
  1. Power Compartments

    • Whether working with water power, solar power or wind power, compartments must be built to keep the energy created by the power source. In addition, for water power, compartments shuffle the water around to continually make more power. Most power from wind or solar energy is collected and then stored in a rechargeable battery. The battery keeps the power until a draw on the system occurs and it releases the power as needed. Batteries can be considered a "compartment" as well.

    Body Storage Compartments

    • Human cells have several compartments. The center of the cell contains all of the genetic code or DNA information. Compartments inside the body keep organs and acid from causing problems in other areas. Your stomach is a compartment that houses digestive fluids. Almost any organ is a compartment for something such as blood, urine or fluids. Your rib cage makes a protective compartment separating your vital organs from your skin and muscles. It offers added protection from damage. Fat cells store fuel for later use and red blood cells compartmentalize fluid for when you run low. All of these compartments keep your body running properly.

    Plant Endoplasmic Reticulum

    • Plant endoplasmic reticulum is one of the most important compartments of a plant cell. It stores calcium for the plant to use as needed. Plant cells also have a compartment between the cell membrane and the cell wall that is filled with fluid. This gives the plant cells a stiffer framework than human cells. This allows plants to store water for later use since the plant cannot control when and if it will get more water. Plants, like cactus, can store water to last for a whole year.

    Virus Storage Compartment

    • The main part of a virus is a storage compartment for DNA. Viruses work by injecting the DNA from inside the cell into your red blood cells. It then attaches to your DNA and replicates more of the errant viral cells. Your white blood cells recognize this is not "like" DNA and begins to attack the viruses and your cells reboot to remove the entire virus from your system.

    Computer Storage Compartment

    • Computers store information in small electrical chips inside the motherboard of the system. These science compartments use magnetic energy to run the computer system. They hold everything from little bits of information you want to save as well as all the data the computer needs to run. The coding stored within these chips allows your computer to boot up and perform functions at your request.
