Boat Propeller Repair Tools

Repairing a boat propeller is a delicate undertaking which requires precision tools. Due to the exploding pleasure craft market, there have been great advances in propeller technology, making them more and more precise. So, when propellers are damaged by floating debris, you need the proper tools to ensure your propeller returns to its original state.
  1. Propeller Balancing Tools

    • Propeller balancing tools are large, floor-mounted devices usually only found in professional boat mechanic shops. Some don't require you to rotate the propeller, such as a static balance machine which measures the tilt of a propeller which is seated on its axis. The operator adjusts the heavier blades until the machine reads the propeller as balanced. Dynamic propeller balance machines spin the propeller and the operator adjusts the off-balance blades by adding or removing weight. All dynamic tests are followed by a static test.

    Digital Protractor for Propeller Pitch

    • Digital protractors offer the most accurate measure of pitch to ensure your propellers blades are each consistent with the pitch you desire. When using a digital protractor to measure each blade of your propeller, always use the same side of the protractor you used to zero out the angle of the mounting hub. Make sure each blade is in the exact same position when you take your measurements and take care the protractor is positioned the same relative to each blade. Use a ratchet-bar clamp to hold the protractor to the blade.

Grinding and Finishing Aluminum, Bronze or Stainless Steel Propellers

    • To grind and finish your boat propeller, you will need a variety of tools. For propellers made of aluminum, stainless steel or bronze, the same general set of tools is required: a belt sander, grinder, random orbital, bench motor and flexible shaft grinders. The process for these metals is virtually the same, though when you prepare to prime the steel or bronze, your belt sander will need: P120 regalite polycut or coarse scotch-brite. Aluminum propellers need P120 regalite in the belt sander when you prepare to prime.

    Hub Replacement

    • In order to replace your hubs, you will need a hydraulic press rated at 10 tons or greater. Also be sure to have the proper funnels, drivers and propeller supports. You will also need lubricant, choosing one of the following: P-80 Rubber Lube, McDurmon 6000 Hub Lube, Propco P-100 Hub Lube, Karo syrup or Liquid dish soap and alcohol, mixed in 1-to-1 solution. Any lubricant you use must be water soluble and should not have an oil base.
