How to Write a Procedural Essay

In order to get any job done, no matter how big or small, it is often best to follow a precise procedure. You need to do the same when writing a procedural essay, sometimes referred to as a "process" or a "how to" paper. Such essays produce the detailed instructions to help cross the finish and achieve a given goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a familiar topic. Consider choosing something that demonstrates expertise in a subject, such as "How to Change a Flat Tire in 10 Minutes or Less," or "How to Change a Flat Tire on a Ford Mustang" rather than just "How to Change a Flat Tire."

    • 2

Write a brief overview or introduction that presents the topic of the procedure.

    • 3

Construct a sentence, or paragraph, that lists the tools necessary to complete the task. The details of locating and gathering the specific tools might be the first step.

    • 4

Consider all the sequential steps that follow, and write them down in the correct order.

    • 5

Allow each step to form its own paragraph. Add any necessary details. These procedural steps form the structure (in free standing paragraphs), the "body" of the essay.

    • 6

Write a concluding paragraph, usually two to three sentences in length, that gently points back to the introduction and the procedure accomplished. A final comment of how difficult, or easy, the task was adds a finishing stroke to the concluding paragraph.

    • 7

Proofread for spelling or other grammar errors, and make necessary corrections.

    • 8

Check that all steps and details of the process have been included. Revise if necessary.
