Locksmithing Schools

Everyone encounters a lock at some point in their lives, usually at least once or twice a day. Adults lock the doors to their homes and cars, while students generally keep a combination lock on their school locker. Teenagers keep locks on their diaries while jailers keep locks on prison doors. Locks are an important part of our lives, and locksmiths are important to keep those locks in pristine, working order. A locksmith may be called upon to both install locks and to unlock a particular door. Education for a locksmith is not required as it may be for other careers, but there are accredited classes for aspiring locksmiths and for those seeking to continue their educations.
  1. Resident

    • Resident locksmithing schools are actual brick-and-mortar buildings with lesson plans and set classes. Some examples include Abram Friedman Occupational Center in Los Angeles, California; the American Locksmith Institute in Henderson, Nevada; the Charles Stuart School in Brooklyn, New York; and Prince Georges Community College in Largo, Maryland.

    Online

    • For aspiring locksmiths who cannot attend a set class, online education may be the solution. The Associated Locksmith's of America offers online classes for both beginning locksmiths and for those seeking continuing education to maintain accreditation by the association. The training center is based in Dallas, Texas, and also has classes on-site.

    Correspondence

    • For those who have the patience to complete a certification program via mail, a correspondence program is available through some schools. Correspondence programs are offered through the Assured Business Group located in Holmes Beach, Florida; Foley-Belsaw Institute in Kansas City, Missouri; and Penn Foster Career School in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

    Unaccredited Education

    • The previous suggestions have been accredited by the Associated Locksmiths of America. There are locksmith education opportunities out there at institutions that are not members of this association. The Master Locksmiths Association is a connection of state chapters, with each state chapter offering classes for its state members.
