How to Stay Disciplined With Online Learning

Online learning offers you the opportunity to learn new things, earn a degree or advance your career, all from the comfort of your own home. Unfortunately, without the pressure of attending scheduled in-person classes, some students quickly fall behind, especially when juggling school, work and their personal life. It's up to you, the student, to do the work needed to pass your courses. A positive attitude and self-discipline will keep you on track to be successful in your online studies.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of your ultimate goals. Taking your online courses should help you achieve these goals. Once you have this list, post it in a place where you can see it often. Focusing on your reasons for taking online classes can help you succeed.

    • 2

Create a weekly study schedule. Kellogg Community College states that you should expect to devote between nine and 12 hours per week for each online course that you're taking. Schedule this around your other commitments.

    • 3

Stick to your schedule. Consider your scheduled study times a commitment. When someone asks you to do something during that time, you are busy. If you absolutely must do something during a scheduled session, reschedule it as soon as possible.

    • 4

Divide your assignments into manageable chunks. When one of your assignments is to write a 10 page report or read a book, it can seem like an insurmountable task. Instead, create a short goal that you can accomplish in one or two study sessions, such as create a report outline or read two chapters.

    • 5

Put away all distractions as you study. If you have the TV on or your phone nearby, you can easily become distracted. You need to focus all of your energy on studying during planned sessions.
