How to Cut Acetone

Acetone is a flammable, colorless liquid that is often employed in scientific laboratories. Even though the most common household use of acetone is for removing nail polish, the substance can also be used for cutting objects. This is works because it acts as a cleaner and removes grease and possible adhesives from the substance to be cut, making the process easier. Safety goggles and gloves should be used in this process, as acetone has a high level of toxicity.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the safety goggles and gloves to ensure safety.

    • 2

Decide on the material to cut. The procedure is different for different items. For example, if cutting synthetic glass, acetone should be used for scrubbing grease and dirt from the surface of the material. On the other hand, cutting glass with acetone involves using a lighter.

    • 3

Apply acetone to the surface of the material to be cut. If cutting glass, however, soak a string in acetone.

    • 4

Wait for a few minutes, until the acetone removes any trace of debris.

    • 5

Use a knife or similar tool to cut the material. The process should now be much easier. If cutting glass, tie the string soaked in acetone around the glass and light the string with a lighter. The string will cut through the glass.
