Choose five or six colors with which to start, such as black (schwarz), gray, (grau), blue (blow), red (rot) and yellow (gelb). Write these down, and practice saying the word. This will give you a basis from which to work, and allow you to learn in steps.
Label things with the colors you are learning. Find things that you use regularly, such as your laptop, phone or bag, and label them with sticky notes. Label the fridge, walls and your bed. Label anything that features the colors you are learning.
Say the color out loud every time you see a label. At the start, talking to yourself may sound odd, but speaking out loud is the best way to practice pronunciation. If you are unsure how something is said, make sure you research it, such as pronouncing "blow" for "blue" the same as your pronounce "now."
Look at what other colors you need to know. You might find that you have a lot of pink in your apartment, so begin to practice "rosa" and label this. Colors such as beige and orange are easy, as they are spelled the same as they are in English.
Learn how to describe color, such as "Hell" for light, "Dunkel" for dark and "Bunt" for colorful. Update your color labels to identify the tone of each color; this will help you to remember each color and what it means.
Attend local German speaking classes. You may find these at a college or trade school, or in places such as coffee shops, where people learning German meet up to practice. This will help you to hear other people's pronunciation. Contact college linguistic departments to inquire about meetings held there, and look at local noticeboards for advertisements for other groups. Libraries, tourist information centers and community centers may also have information about these types of groups.
Make flash cards. Color one side with a crayon in the right color, and write the color's name on the back. When you can correctly identify the colors, make cards with lighter or darker colors, and add these words in, too. You could also scribble on a card with a few different colors and label it "Bunt" for "colorful."
