The Advantages of Being a Member of a Sorority

Sororities have historically been a topic of controversy. On one hand, these types of organizations can add value and meaning to a college student's life -- even after graduation. However, some argue that sororities are too exclusive and don't promote respectable behavior. It's important to research all sororities before committing to joining one. Make sure you know what each one stands for, what activities they are involved with on campus and whether or not you would fit in with their culture.
  1. Community

    • One of the most popular reasons for joining a sorority is to find a sense of community. On large campuses especially, joining a sorority is an easy way to make instant friends and have access to social events. Because members live together, there are usually plenty of other women to talk to and spend time with, regardless of your academic interests. Since making friends in college can be difficult at first, joining a sorority is one effective way to meet people quickly.

    Philanthropy

    • Most sororities are involved in some kind of community service work. If you're in a sorority, you'll have the chance to make a difference by offering your time and helping to raise money for specific causes. Not only is philanthropy a great way to meet new people and create positive change, but it also is an honorable thing to put on your resume once you graduate from college and are looking for jobs.

    Continuing Support

    • Joining a sorority also offers benefits once you leave college. Many sororities have strong networks of alumni who still get together, host events and help one another in their professional lives. Being a part of a sorority can often help you land a job with another sister's company or gain access to prestigious clubs or alumni associations. The bond that sisters of the same sorority have seems to last long after college has ended.

    Diversity

    • One of the advantages of joining a sorority is that you will be exposed to different women who come from different areas and backgrounds. Additionally, you will meet other men and women in Greek life beyond your own sorority. A sorority can expose you to different cultures, ethnicities and traditions that you might not ever learn about otherwise. Since college is the perfect time to broaden your horizons, joining a sorority is one of the easiest ways to accomplish that.
