Activities for Disability Awareness Week

The purpose of Disabilities Awareness Week, which usually takes place during the first two weeks of October, is to make students, faculty and the community aware of the issues faced by people with disabilities. It is also designed to call attention to the abilities of disabled people through various activities.
  1. Guest Lectures

    • Guest lectures by prominent people in the community with disabilities give insight into the personal, professional and emotional challenges of living with a disability. Question and answer sessions with guest lecturers allow the attendees to ask questions they may have been previously afraid to ask.

    Sporting Events

    • Games such as wheelchair basketball allow participants, both disabled and non-disabled alike, to foster a competitive spirit. While playing, the teams will learn to appreciate the challenges and advantages of playing in a wheelchair. Wheelchair basketball also gives those with disabilities the opportunity to showcase their skills on the court despite their disability.

    Film Screenings

    • Screen films that bring attention to the unique challenges of living with a disability. When possible, have participants discuss the film and share their reaction.
