How to Learn Fraternity Stepping

Originating in the 1950s on historically black college campuses, fraternity stepping incorporates elements of tap, gymnastics, cheer leading and traditional African ritual dancing. Fraternities competed against each other by trying to come up with the most original and athletic steps to attract new recruits. Fraternity stepping has expanded beyond college campuses thanks to performance acts such as Step Afrika and movies like "Stomp the Yard."

Instructions

    • 1

Attend a stepping workshop if you live close to a university. Look for fraternity community service nights aimed at introducing others to stepping. Contact a local fraternity's community service coordinator if one is not available.

    • 2

Watch clips of stepping performances. Avoid hybrid performances, such as scenes from movies like "Stomp the Yard," because they feature other dance styles incorporated with traditional fraternity stepping.

    • 3

Practice one step at a time. Isolate one segment out of a clip. Re-watch that segment several times while making note of each move that the steppers perform. Mimic each move until you can repeat the pattern easily.
