What Are Dorms?

High school students entering college may be curious about what type of dorms are available at the college they will be attending. While there are some downsides to living in dorms, college dorms also provide college students with numerous benefits. According to The New York Times, Kevin Kruger, a spokesman for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, states that students living on campus do better academically than students who live off campus. However, it all depends on what type of dorm you occupy.
  1. Similar Interests Dorms

    • These dorms pair students together based on their interests. Maybe you would prefer staying with other students who share the same study habits as you. This is a great way to ensure that you stay motivated to study. By being friends with someone who also values study time, you can be rest assured that your grades will not suffer the consequences while staying on campus. College Board.com states, however, there are drawbacks to living with people who have the same interests as you. You are limiting yourself to a particular type of friend or acquaintance; therefore, you won't have the pleasure of meeting people outside your social group who have varying interests.

    Party Dorms

    • Just as there are many students who enjoy curling up with a good book on Friday nights, there are also students who enjoy partying. Some of the most memorable events students remember while attending college are all the parties that took place on campus and off campus. If you are the type of person who enjoys celebrating a few days of the week, with a few drinks and socializing with other people, than a party dorm would be the best type of dorm for those who enjoy these type of activities.

    Same-Sex Dorms

    • Sometimes it better to live with someone who is the same sex as you. Not only does it alleviate any uncomfortable situations where privacy is concerned, but it is also helpful to roommate with someone who you may automatically bond with based on your same sex similarities. It is especially helpful if you find a roommate whom you can form a strong friendship with. Most of the time students who stay on campus the first year are limited to these types of dorms. Usually members of the opposite sex are allowed to visit same sex dorms; however, they are only given access during set hours and certain times of the week.

    Mixed-Sex Dorms

    • The fact is, some people may get along better with members of the opposite sex or they may instantly bond with someone of a different sex. And for some people, the sex of another person may not even be an issue. The Los Angeles Times reports that even though there are fewer students who prefer co-ed housing, the fact is, students are adults and should be able to live with whomever they feel most comfortable with. However, one common pitfall of rooming with someone of the opposite sex is when the two people engage in a romantic relationship together. When the relationship goes south, it can make for a very uncomfortable living situation. This is why it is beneficial for both people to steer clear from any type of romantic involvement with their roommate when living on campus.
