How to Deal With Dorm Bathrooms

Moving to a dormitory from your parents' house or an off-campus apartment may require an adjustment period. Inconsiderate roommates and loud neighbors are not problems limited to dormitories; however, the small living quarters, shared bathroom facilities and diverse population may cause tension and stress to dorm-dwellers. Use different techniques to deal with communal bathrooms, large facilities shared by an entire floor, and en-suite bathrooms, private bathrooms shared by a few roommates.

Instructions

  1. Communal Bathrooms

    • 1

Invest in a shower caddy to carry your shower supplies from your dorm room to the communal bathroom. Make sure to bring a towel, your caddy, and a bathrobe or clean clothing to the bathroom before you shower.

    • 2

Wear shower shoes or waterproof sandals to protect your feet against bacteria and infections like planter warts and athlete's foot.

    • 3

Monitor the traffic in the bathroom for a few days to determine the least-busy times to shower. You may need to wake up earlier or adjust your schedule to account for waiting time. Be patient -- wait your turn if there is a line.

    • 4

Be respectful of other's possessions and privacy. Don't hover near the shower stalls or use other's bath products without permission.

    • 5

Don't make a mess deliberately. You may not have to clean communal bathrooms, but other students may need to use the facilities before a staff member can clean up the mess. Alert dormitory staff members about any maintenance issues or unsanitary areas in the bathroom.

    En-Suite Bathrooms

    • 6

Create a cleaning schedule for the bathroom. Choose a rotational schedule so the responsibility is shared evenly. Make sure everyone agrees with the schedule and signs it before posting it in the bathroom.

    • 7

Find out if the dormitory will supply paper products like toilet paper or tissue for your bathroom. Create a rotational schedule for purchasing paper products if they are not provided.

    • 8

Remove your dirty clothes and towels from the bathroom every day. Avoid cluttering the bathroom with your things.

    • 9

Resolve any complaints or issues with roommates as they occur. Use respectful language and a calm tone when addressing issues with your roommates. Ask your resident assistant or hall director to intervene if the conflict becomes too heated.
