The NROTC program provides scholarships to select college students and includes both coursework and summer training cruises. Upon graduation, midshipmen in the NROTC program are commissioned as ensigns in the Navy Reserve. After serving on active duty for a period of time, Navy Reserve officers can transition to the inactive reserves and continue to serve while pursuing their other interests, including continuing their education or working in a civilian career.
The Navy also offers other pathways for full-time students to serve in the Navy Reserves, such as the Navy Reserve Officer Candidate (ROC) program, which does not require candidates to participate in the NROTC program during college.
