College bound students should research schools they would like to attend and take the SAT and ACT tests beginning in their 11th-grade year. Students should also visit schools that are of interest to them, and decide on which schools they wish to attend. They should apply to those schools either online or on paper. Next, SAT and ACT scores are sent to the schools of their choice.
In the fall of their 12th-grade year, students can begin making decisions on schools they would like to attend. Those who received early acceptance letters have the opportunity to make the decisions earlier. Once the student makes a final decision, she can apply for financial aid and scholarships. The student should notify the school of her choice that she has accepted the offer, and she will likely receive a packet of information regarding housing options and meal plans at the school. After she reads this information, it's time to decide whether she will live on or off campus and complete the paperwork for housing. Some schools allow students to select their buildings. Other schools make housing decisions, so the student will have to wait for the final assignments.
As the time grows nearer to leave for college, the student should collect the things that she will need to live away from home. Colleges usually provide a list of items that students should bring. Items that a college bound student may need include school supplies, eating utensils, electrical appliances, bedding and linens, lamps and other room furnishings and cleaning supplies. Personal items like deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, soap and a toothbrush are also necessary.
Financially, students must make sure that their financial aid forms are completed. Some students may have been awarded financial aid, so they need to know when their disbursement is expected. Some schools do not disburse the money until after the first two weeks of school, so students may need their own money to survive until they get their check. Students should also pay their housing deposit before arriving at the school. Pay tuition before the deadline or discuss payment options with the university. Don't forget to inquire about whether cars are allowed on campus, and determine the fees for parking on campus.
