How to Apply Problem Solving Skills

Problem-solving involves using critical thinking skills to analyze a problem, discover the best way to solve it, implement the solution and make sure the situation is resolved. These skills can be applied to anything you are working on, from a paper or school project to an inconvenient situation, such as being stuck without a car. Having good problem-solving skills will enable you to efficiently work your way through a project and reach the goal you are aiming for.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the problem. Thing about the situation and put into words what about it is unsatisfactory. If you want, you can write the problem down. The problem might be "Going to Chicago to visit family when I don't have a car."

    • 2

Learn as much about the problem as you can. Write down what caused the problem, when it first occurred, how long the problem has been affecting you. For instance, if you wanted to go somewhere and you did not have a car, you'd look at your options for alternative means of transportation.

    • 3

Make a list of possible options to resolve the situation. Narrow the list as much as you can, and list the pros and cons of each possible resolution. Be as detailed as you can. Try to brainstorm ideas and discuss possible solutions. Someone else may be able to see the problem or project from a different angle; this can be very helpful.

    • 4

Make a final selection and implement the solution.

    • 5

Analyze and evaluate the solution to see how successful the outcome is. When you review, see if there are any changes you could have made to improve your solution, and if there was anything you would do differently after the fact. Discuss the resolution of your project or plans if necessary with those who might be affected by your solution.
