Parade Float Ideas for Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders often participate in homecoming or other school-related parades. While many parades have an overarching theme—"decades" is a popular one—others are more broad and leave float ideas entirely up to participants.

When choosing float ideas, cheerleaders should make sure the set allows for enough floor space to perform routines and that their costumes are conducive to moving around.
  1. Team Mascot

    • A team mascot float can encourage school spirit. Cheerleaders can create a large mascot head with cardboard and paint, and place it towards one end of the float to leave the floor clear for cheer routines, or place a team mascot image on the float floor. Cheerleaders can dress up as the school mascot and participate in cheer routines.

    Decades Float

    • Decades are a common theme for homecoming parades, and contain floats reminiscent of styles from different eras. With a 1980s-themed float, for example, cheerleaders can use glittery decorations for the platform and dress in '80s styles (think Madonna, spandex, headbands and big sweatshirts) while they perform cheers.

For a 1950s-themed float, cheerleaders can decorate the float floor with a vinyl record statue and wear poodle skirts and button-down blouses.

    Luau Float

    • Turn a float into a luau party. Some cheerleaders can strum ukeleles; others can dress up in grass skirts and leis while dancing to the music.

Cover the top of the float with artificial grass and decorate the sides with waves made from cardboard and paint. Include tiki and palm tree statues. Cut out flower shapes and paint them with bright colors.
