While playing for the Packers, Stock suffered a career-ending injury during the third game of the season. He was blocking for Jim Taylor on a running play when he was knocked unconscious. Stock was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken jaw. He never played professional football again.
After retiring from football, Stock worked in business. He was also active in civic affairs, serving on the city council and the school board of his hometown, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Stock died of a heart attack in 1990 at the age of 59.
Stock was involved in a controversy during his time at Notre Dame. He was one of several players who were accused of accepting money from gamblers. Stock was never charged with a crime, but the scandal led to the resignation of Notre Dame football coach Frank Leahy.
Despite the controversy, Stock is considered one of the greatest linemen in Notre Dame football history. He was selected as a first-team All-American in 1951 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
