Find out the name and room number of the dorm room or apartment where your freshman will be living as soon as you can, ideally at least one year ahead of time so you can prepare.
Go to the campus or apartment building for a tour. Visit the exact room, especially if living in a dorm, as not all dorms are arranged the same. Ask to visit another room on the hall that your child will be staying on, if you cannot see the actual room.
Measure the space, including the bed, desk and closet if applicable; record the measurements for when you purchase items so you do not waste money on items that do not fit.
Host a gift-giving shower, similar to a housewarming shower, for your college freshman at least six months before the student will begin school.
Invite family members, friends and other parents who have children attending college; parents who have already sent a child to college will have firsthand knowledge about what is needed for college freshmen.
Request bedding; office supplies; gift cards to local restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores; as well as cash, if invitees inquire about what your freshman needs.
Wait until after classes begin to make sure the student is not going to drop any classes before investing in textbooks or course-related materials.
Have the student ask around the dorm and read posts on bulletin boards to see if other students are advertising the sale of particular textbooks.
Go online to shop at used book sites. Visit thrift stores in university towns for cheap textbooks.
Begin purchasing bedding, storage containers and office organizers, as well as a shower caddy, desk lamp, microwave and miniature refrigerator when you find these items on discount, at garage sales or thrift stores -- used items that function are acceptable.
Buy office supplies, including a laptop computer, copying paper, college lined paper, notebooks, pens, pencils and a white memo board during the end of the summer when office supplies are deeply discounted at stores. Use coupons along with the store sale prices to increase your savings. Stock up on these supplies to prevent spending money during the school year.
Search for people who are giving away items for free or selling them for a discount, such as futons and desks, through online sites or in your local newspaper.
