What was the original purpose of Duke University?
Duke University was originally founded in 1838 as Trinity College, a small Methodist college for men. Its initial purpose was to provide a higher education in the liberal arts and sciences to young men, primarily from North Carolina. It wasn't until the early 20th century, with the substantial endowment from James B. Duke, that it expanded significantly and became the Duke University we know today, with a broader range of programs and a more diverse student body.
