Science is an important prerequisite subject in almost all pre-veterinary programs. Thus, before you can begin the pre-veterinary program, you will need to have mastered basic science concepts. Many programs require students to have taken basic biology, chemistry and physics courses before enrolling in college-level science courses.
Because of the advanced level of the pre-veterinary math courses, many pre-veterinary programs require that students have taken at least some basic math courses before moving on to the upper-level courses. For example, Louisiana State University's pre-veterinary program requires that students complete college algebra, plane trigonometry, college algebra and trigonometry, analytic geometry and calculus before being accepted into the program. Brigham Young University also requires that pre-veterinary students complete math courses through calculus and statistics before they are admitted to the program.
Communication is another prerequisite course almost all colleges and universities require of their pre-veterinary students. You will generally be required to take at least one English course so you can hone your writing skills. Many colleges also require students to take a speech class before moving on to upper-level courses so they can learn how to express themselves clearly.
As a part of the core requirements that many colleges require of pre-veterinary students, many people find they have to take courses in the humanities. Universities generally require courses such as history, foreign languages and cognitive sciences to ensure that pre-veterinary students have a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in the workforce. Humanities courses are often required electives, meaning you can choose from a variety of classes to fulfill the requirement.
