Basic Thesis Format

A thesis is a statement which must be proved through a written argument. Students completing their master's degree must write a thesis on their topic of study. The thesis consists of an introduction which contains the thesis statement, written arguments, tables, figures and research to support the thesis, citations, conclusions and references.
  1. Introductory Sections

    • The introductory section of a thesis contains a title page, an abstract, table of contents, list of tables, a list of figures and the introduction. The introduction of a thesis specifically states the thesis statement. The writer briefly explains his reasoning for the statement, provides background information, the scope of the work explained in the paper and acknowledgment of prior research completed.

    The Body of the Thesis

    • The body of the thesis contains the research, methods and results. The writer will discuss her research methods and the resulting information. She will explain her thought processes to support the thesis statement. The research results will clearly be displayed through text, figures and tables.

    Citations

    • The writer must cite all sources used in the thesis. Citations occur in the form of footnotes at the bottom of pages on which information is cited or in end notes at the end of the paper. A full bibliography of sources used will be placed at the end of the body of the thesis.

    Conclusions

    • The writer must form conclusions about the research and how that information supports his thesis statement. He must write so a reader will remember important points from the paper. New observations and ideas should be noted. Recommendations for further research can also be added in the conclusion portion of a thesis.

    Acknowledgments

    • The writer should acknowledge anyone who assisted her with the research in a financial, technical or intellectual way at the end of the thesis.
