How to Make Sure Paragraph Lengths Are Good in an Essay

While no definite rules exist regarding the length of paragraphs, the length should be appropriate for the content and for maintaining the overall flow of the paper. Paragraphs are used to manage the content of a paper, helping both the writer and reader decipher between concepts and topics more quickly. Each paragraph should address a single idea and contain supporting statements. Paragraphs should clearly transition throughout the paper and be somewhat similar in length.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the content of individual sentences within the paragraphs and make sure they belong in the paragraph. The sentences should directly support the idea in the paragraph. If a sentence does not support the topic or does not need to be in the paragraph because it is just a filler or fluff, remove it.

    • 2

Check the wording choice used in each sentence of the paragraph. Each sentence should be written using active, direct and concise language, unless otherwise appropriate. Make sure all sentences convey exactly what you want the reader to learn, avoiding any wording that could be confusing or unnecessarily wordy.

    • 3

Check paragraphs for any repetition that may be present. Each paragraph and each sentence within the paragraph should introduce something new or serve a separate purpose. Remove any repetition to eliminate unnecessary length.

    • 4

Count the number of sentences in each paragraph or check the page length. Paragraphs are generally at least five sentences long and can span as much as half a page. If paragraphs are shorter or longer than this, review the content and make sure you are satisfied with it. Generally, all paragraphs should be similar in length. If a paragraph is noticeably longer than the others, check whether it actually contains content that warrants splitting it into two paragraphs. If a paragraph is shorter, look to further develop the content by adding supporting sentences.
