How to Establish a Research Topic

Researching a topic allows us to gain a better understanding of it. Teachers often use research papers to test a student's grasp of subjects. It also reinforces their ability to form conclusions independently. The first step in completing a research paper is to establish a topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the instructions. Read the directions or assignment given. Normally your research paper may be limited in scope, such as topics related to English literature.

    • 2

Strive for a fresh approach when brainstorming or a "hook" to select an interesting topic. Review class assignments, books and lectures for inspiration. Write topic ideas down and make note of ideas that fit into the category of the research.

    • 3

Narrow down your selection. Spend time using the Internet or visit the library to research the topics of interest. Read current event periodicals or leading journals that address two to three of your potential topics.

    • 4

Review the resources to confirm their credibility. Choose only those that provide enough information for the size of your project. Eliminate any unmanageable topics or unreliable resources.

    • 5

Pick one topic. Decide on a general research topic that sparks a broad level of interest. Selecting a topic of interest helps keep you motivated and increases the ability to focus your paper.

    • 6

Ask questions about the topic. Including whether the topic is appropriate for the audience. Think about the overall message you want to convey in the research paper. Take a position on the research topic and develop a thesis statement.

    • 7

Develop your hypothesis or thesis statement. This is a concise and main argument that your research paper explores. Write out your thesis statement as an answer to the question asked when you picked your topic.
