Tips on Getting Organized for School

Every student needs to get organized for school. Even though different education levels require different materials, certain basic organizational techniques apply. Students need supplies and ways to organize classes, homework and extra-curricular activities. Have a plan for returning to school after a long break and for school's constantly changing daily demands.
  1. Supplies

    • Notebooks, pencils, pens and dividers are essentials to help get and stay organized for school. Before the academic year begins, it is time to buy the basics. Make a list of all needed supplies. Students in lower grades require fewer supplies than older students. Organize subjects with dividers in a binder or use notebooks with built-in dividers. For multiple courses, assign one class to each binder and divide subject topics within each notebook. Buy pens, pencils, math supplies, and plenty of paper in advance.

    Homework

    • Of all the aspects of school that require organization, homework is the most important. Homework prepares the student to move forward in each class and to prepare for tests and, ultimately, for the next grade. Invest in an affordable academic planner. Academic planners are 13-month planners and run from July to July. Purchase a planner with enough room to write each homework assignment for each subject. Be prepared to fill in homework assignments as teachers assign them. Record upcoming quizzes and exams. A few days in advance, schedule study time. Record sports and other extra-curricular activities. Don't forget to leave time for unscheduled rest or play.

    Scheduling

    • At the beginning of an academic year or semester, new class schedules can be overwhelming. Many notebooks have space to record each class and the days and times classes meet. For more advanced studies, students can record class room numbers and/or buildings. Eventually, this information is easily absorbed by sheer routine.

    Smoothing the Edges

    • Create ways at home to keep organized. Use an alarm clock to wake up in time for school. Eat breakfast. It really is an important meal for getting through the day. Set up a desk or table space for homework. Always use that area to do homework. Keep school supplies in one place to save time and energy.

    Computers

    • If a laptop or personal computer is helpful, use it to full advantage. Standard software includes scheduling applications, such as Outlook. Use Word or other word processing software. Create folders for classes. Keep the folders organized by classes and in view on the desktop. Set reminders for projects, exams and other important activities. If teachers allow email contact, take advantage of the opportunity. Keep email organized by class and topics, such as Extra Credit and Homework Questions.
