How to Pass an RN Test

An RN is a registered nurse. Registered nurses work in all aspects of patient care, including education, research and direct patient supervision. In order to become a registered nurse, you must complete at least two years of education at a school of nursing, community college or a four-year institution. Once you have passed your classes in nursing you must pass state licensing exams. Being a nurse means passing many different tests. Learning to do well on such exams can make the transition to a nursing career much easier.

Take detailed class notes. As part of your nursing training, you will generally be required to sit for many classes. During this time the lecturer will talk you through academic materials that form the basis of your nursing education. Pay close attention to the instructor's answers and lectures, and bring a notebook with you at all times even when the instructor is giving hands-on presentations.

    • 2

Read all textbooks very closely. Nursing textbooks are designed around a standard curriculum that will help you understand nursing practices and procedures. Nursing exams draw on material found in nursing textbooks. Use a highlighter to indicate text that you feel is particularly important or material that you don't understand well. Ask the teacher about the material in class the next day.

    • 3

Find out what's on the exam. Many nursing exams adhere to a specific format. For example, the nursing board exams are known as NCLEX exams, or National Counsel Licensure Exams. Questions from previous exams and even copies of sample tests can be found in preparatory books and even online. The NCLEX focuses solely on questions related to nursing. You can also ask the instructor what material will be covered during each exam.

Practice medical procedures. Some nursing school exams will require you to demonstrate that you can perform nursing duties that meet the standard of care. Such duties may include inserting an intravenous line, as well as calming an emotionally disturbed patient or properly reading a scan. Proper insertion of medication may take time and practice. Use items such as oranges to learn how to properly insert a needle.

Use good test-taking strategies. Arrive to the exam on time. Eat a full breakfast on the day of the exam. Use relaxation techniques such as meditation to help reduce your anxiety level.
