How to Teach Organization Skills in Tutoring

Sometimes students need assistance in organizing their materials, so that they can be successful in their classes. One good way to do this is to give them one or two large binders with dividers to separate their classwork and study guides from their different subjects. Another idea is to advise them to buy a medium-sized notebook where they can write down the dates of homework assignments that are due and exam dates.

Instructions

    • 1

Help students gather research ahead of time. If the person you're tutoring needs to work on a 15 page literary analysis in two weeks, go with the student to the library or bookstore on the day the assignment is given, so you can get a head start in finding the right materials.

    • 2

Create a study guide for the student. For example, if you spent the past three weeks going over algebra for the state high school graduation exam, assemble a packet that focuses on all the important concepts that the student should focus on. Also, include some pointers on certain concepts that the student struggles with. This keeps the student organized and makes it easier for her to study.

Buy a small case for the student's small school supplies. This keeps the student from losing them in the backpack and having to constantly replace them.
