ASE: What Is It?

Everyone knows that a shop that advertises itself as having ASE certification is reputable, but few people really know why. ASE certification separates backyard mechanics from true professionals, as it has done for more than three decades.
  1. History

    • The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit organization for standardizing automotive testing and certification.

    Purpose

    • The ASE sets standards for testing nationwide, which helps ensure that any employer who is seeking to hire a mechanic can rest assured that the mechanic has been properly trained.

    Testing

    • The ASE sets standards for testing in every area of automotive repair. These include standards for engine repair, suspension and steering, brakes and advanced engine performance.

    Pay

    • According to Universal Technical Institute, an ASE-certified mechanic averages $15,000 a year more in starting pay than a noncertified mechanic.

    Master Certification

    • A master technician is one who has completed and passed every certification test that ASE has to offer in his given field.
