There are numerous areas of research related to transportation technology that is reliant upon more sustainable forms of energy, some of which include hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel cells, alternative fuels, advanced batteries and alternative vehicle systems such as high-speed trains.
Many universities and technical colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degrees that provide training in designing and maintaining new forms of transportation and energy technology. Arizona State University, University of Pittsburgh and Wayne State University are three of the American schools that provide degrees in the field.
Certain non-government organizations, such as CALSTART in California, provide consulting services, organize forums and publish informational resources that promote the development and use of sustainable transportation systems.
The U.S. Department of Energy funds the Argonne National Laboratory, which conducts extensive research and development related to transportation and energy technology. The laboratory also maintains a media center and publishes its findings to further educational pursuits in the field.
