Look into getting your TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language)certification. Find out how much it costs, the length of the course and where it is held so that you can begin making plans to attend the course. Many Chinese universities or private teacher recruitment programs require a TEFL certification.

Decide if you want to arrange your time teaching English in China through a Chinese university or private program. You can contact Chinese universities directly to inquire about their teacher openings and terms of compensation. There are also many private groups and agencies that recruit people for teaching English in China. Many of these are religiously affiliated which is something you need to decide if you are comfortable with or not.

Consider whether you would like to do a one or two year stint teaching English in China or would like to go on some other terms. Many universities and recruitment groups will only pay half of your plane ticket if you go for a year and all of your ticket if you stay for two years. A two year commitment is generally preferred but one year is also possible.
