Educate yourself as much as possible about life as an English teacher in Southeast Asia. Talk to friends who have worked as English teachers in Southeast Asia and visit Internet forums such as Dave's ESL cafe (see Resources below) to get a sense of what to expect. Websites such as Transitions Abroad also offer helpful information.
Research Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) programs in your area. While some English teaching positions in Southeast Asia only require a bachelor's degree, a TEFL certificate will give you an edge over other applicants, particularly for better-compensated positions.
Enroll in a TEFL program. Most major cities offer TEFL or TESOL programs. Depending on whether a student is enrolled in a part-time or full-time program, it can take anywhere from one month to more than three months to obtain a certificate. San Francisco's Transworld School's full-time TEFL certificate program can be completed in just four weeks (see Resources below). The part-time program requires 14 weeks to complete.
Draft a resume and cover letter describing your desire to teach in Southeast Asia. Detail any relevant teaching experience, whether paid or as a volunteer. If you do not have teaching experience, play up your education credentials, including your newly acquired TEFL certificate.
Apply for English teaching posts in Southeast Asia. Many TEFL programs also provide job placement assistance to students upon completion of a TEFL certificate. Websites such as Dave's ESL cafe and Jobs Abroad also advertise English teaching positions.
Prepare for your job interview. Most interviews are conducted by phone, according to the TEFL Institute. Before the interview, prepare a list of any questions you may have. During the interview, speak clearly and do not hesitate to ask additional questions if something is unclear. Do not forget to inquire about required visas, salary and housing, as well as vacation time and class size. Some Southeast Asia teaching programs may even pay for the airfare to your respected country.
Carefully examine your contract. If something is unclear or if you have additional questions, follow up with the school and request clarification.
