Don't choose a specialization that won't interest you. If your parents believe you should specialize in marketing but you plan to open your own accounting firm, choose accounting or finance as your specialization. Or if your friends tell you that there's a lucrative career in computer systems but your passion is nonprofit work, consider a specialization in nonprofit administration.
Review the course descriptions of the specialization you're interested in. If you want to specialize in music management, meet with professors who teach courses within this specialization and ask how each course fits in with your understanding of the music business; what will be taught in the courses; and what is expected of students. If possible, talk with students who have this specialization and ask them about what ways they benefit from the courses.
Choose a specialization that will challenge you intellectually. If your background is in journalism but you're seeking a more rewarding career as an economist in order to increase your knowledge of economics as a business reporter, choose specializations such as international business or business law.
