Locate programs you are interested in and that have the concentration you want. Examples may include kinesiology, sports and recreation, health or physical education. See the Resources section for a link that lists graduate programs in sports medicine. Request information on accreditation before applying to any online school or programs not offered by an established university.
Check specific prerequisites for the program you want to enter. Complete the prerequisite undergraduate classes or coursework. Examples include physics, chemistry, biomechanics, human anatomy and human physiology. Higher mathematics or statistics courses may also be required.
Compile all necessary paperwork and records to apply to the program. This includes transcripts of all past college work showing the required prerequisites have been completed, entrance exam records like the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), a completed application form, recommendation forms and an essay describing why you have chosen the sports medicine program to which you are applying. Recommendations from professors who taught the prerequisite courses would be preferred. Your essay should mention any experience you have in the sports medicine field, such as health educator, physical trainer, nutritionist or any other related experience. Always check with the school to know exactly what is required to complete your application. Submit a request for financial aid or graduate assistantships if offered.
Complete the required coursework for your chosen concentration. You may also have to complete practicum or intern hours depending on the program's specific requirements. For example, you may be required to work an internship in a physical therapist's office or sports medicine clinic, which can also help establish a relevant work history for when you graduate and start applying for jobs.
