How to Write a Liberal Sciences Concentration Study Plan

A study plan very simply maps out your plan of action as you work towards your degree at a university. At most universities, the college of your choosing will have a study plan available that specifies which classes you'll need to graduate, and it's your job to fill in the gaps with electives and courses that will further help you in your chosen field. Many colleges and universities expect students to submit a study plan to their advisers when they declare their majors, so make sure you take this process as seriously as you would any other assignment – even the very fluid liberal sciences degree has specific requirements that each student must fulfill.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit at a desk or table where you'll have lots of room to work, and lay the four pieces of paper out in front of you, folded in half. Label each piece of paper at the top by year of school: freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Also, mark the top of each page with the words “Semester One,” and at the fold, “Semester Two.” If you plan to attend the summer sessions, you may choose to create another section at the bottom of each paper for summer courses.

    • 2

Read the list of courses that are required for your liberal sciences major as well as which courses are required to graduate for each student regardless of major. Determine which courses have prerequisites, as well as how many electives you'll be allowed to take.

    • 3

Use your course catalog to choose the classes you'll be taking, based on your school's and major's requirements.

    • 4

Determine which core courses are required for you to graduate with a major in liberal sciences, then look for them in your course catalog.

    • 5

Fill out your junior and senior year study plan sheets by semester, making sure you meet all of the core requirements. Fill in any blank credit hours with electives of your choosing from the course catalog.

    • 6

Review the four sheets to ensure you meet all requirements, and that you'll have enough credit hours to graduate by the end of your senior year. This is also a good time to ensure that you haven't written down any duplicate courses (this is where the four separate sheets comes in handy).

    • 7

Transfer your finalized course plan to the official study plan form that you'll turn in to your adviser.
