“Liberal arts” is a term that has various applications. For instance, a liberal arts academic program emphasizes the study of an array of subjects, including language, literature, philosophy, history, math and science.
According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities, liberal arts can refer to a curriculum that features varied subjects, from English to sociology to physics. The idea is that this approach to education will produce a student with varied interests and fields of expertise, rather than a narrower field of study, such as engineering or mathematics. Liberal arts colleges are those that put particular emphasis on the study of liberal arts.
The historical basis of contemporary liberal arts educations are the artes liberales, comprised of the trivium, (grammar, logic and rhetoric) and quadrivium (geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and music).
Bachelor of science refers to a type of undergraduate degree earned by an individual who studies a physical or social science. The term "bachelor of science" can also refer to a person who has earned such a degree.
Another common type of degree is a bachelor of arts, given to those who complete undergraduate level studies of the humanities and fine arts.
