How to Write a Good Admissions Essay

When writing an admissions essay, focus primarily on the things that qualify you for admission to a specific college. Include specific details such as your major achievements, difficult obstacles that you overcame, career goals and why you're choosing this college. The college admissions essay is similar to that of a job cover letter---you're selling yourself to the school, convincing its admissions office to allow you to attend.

Be honest and original. It is a turn-off for admissions directors to read insincere essays, overly exaggerated and unoriginal. Write about your strengths and weaknesses while still expressing confidence in your abilities to do well at this particular school.

    • 2

Discuss your major achievements. If you started an online vintage clothing store two years ago and now your sales have increased your yearly profits to $50,000, mention this in the essay. This shows the reader that you're dedicated and willing to work hard to achieve your goals. If you won awards in high school for science projects, include them in the essay.

Mention any obstacles you overcame. For example, if you survived a natural disaster in your area and managed to rebuild your home, discuss how this situation motivated you to pursue bigger goals in life and reminded you of the importance of remaining strong in the midst of adversity.

Ask someone to proofread your essay. Give your article to a teacher, relative or friend with good grammatical skills. This is important because a well-written essay will increase your chances of getting noticed by an admissions director.
