How Do I Develop Articulation Agreements With Teachers?

An articulation agreement among schools of higher education allow students to advance from one school's course of study to the next seamlessly. These agreements state which classes a student can take in one school that will serve as prerequisites or credits for the school the next level up. Articulation agreements are typically signed between high schools and colleges or community colleges and universities. They help teachers and professors know the expectations for different classes and allow them to come to an agreement on what to teach in the classroom to prepare the students better for the future.

Instructions

    • 1

To develop an articulation agreement among teachers and professors in different schools, decide what courses of study and degree programs exist that could potentially feed into each other and make both more successful. For example, a high school with a college prep course focused on humanities could easily feed into a community college or university program for an English degree.

    • 2

Sponsor a meeting for the teachers to review their courses and study programs in depth with each other. Have the teachers bring their syllabi, textbooks, course descriptions and curriculum guidelines. Find out where overlaps exist and decide how to connect the overlaps to benefit the student; either by prerequisite requirements or course credit.

    • 3

Once all the overlaps have been discovered, work together to find more similarities you can work with. Decide how to develop new courses that retain the necessary requirements but also feed better into the program of higher education. Keep in mind that it is not just the earlier school making all the adjustments to fit the school that offers the higher degree.

    • 4

Create an agreement document that outlines all the changes you and your fellow teachers decided on. Present it to the appropriate governing bodies like the school board and the college's appropriate academic and student affairs departments. Be prepared to explain the need for the changes and to make further adjustments to the agreement.

    • 5

Make a finalized copy of the agreement and sign it into reality. Begin planning and making proper adjustments in class curricula and student class manuals to reflect the new changes.
