Both methods of research measure collected data. Qualitative research methods generally measure words, such as written, verbal or audio responses to a survey or focus group. Quantitative techniques also measure data but are concerned with numbers, such as the statistics produced by the results of a survey.
Both qualitative and quantitative research methods utilize techniques to describe data. Qualitative research involves finding common themes among responses, usually by grouping similar words or statements. Qualitative research uses statistics called descriptive statistics, to describe the basic mathematical or statistical characteristics of data.
Qualitative and quantitative researchers look to raise questions about a certain topic, through exploration. Both research methods should lead to further questions about a specific area; results for both methodologies should feed future research in that area.
