The Asian-American Studies graduate program at the University of California at Irvine uses an interdisciplinary approach that allows students to concentrate on Asian-American studies in relation to a Ph.D. in another department. It offers courses in such areas as Asian-American Film and Video, Asian-American Women, Asian-American Literature, Politics of Protest, Asian-American Labor, Vietnamese-American Experience, Chinatowns in American Society, Ethnic Food, and Ethnic Identity and Asian-American Race Relations. Ph.D. students complement their studies in other departments with elective courses in Asian-American studies, two foundation courses in Asian-American studies as well as elective courses relating to the specific area of study.

The University of California at Berkeley offers a flexible Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, under which students are able to concentrate on Asian-American studies. Graduates of the program have gone on to teach at Yale University, Cornell, New York University, Rutgers, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of California at San Diego and Berkeley.

The University of Southern California offers a Ph.D. program in American Studies and Ethnicity, with a chance to focus on Asian-American studies. The program is structured to last between five and six years, and typically only accepts students with B.A. degrees, though those who already have a masters degree will most likely be able to transfer some of their credits into the program. Asian-American studies scholars teaching in the department include Jane Iwamura, Dorinne Kondo, Lon Korashige, Viet Nguyen, Leland Saito and Janelle Wong. All Ph.D. graduates have gone on to find academic employment. Graduate courses include Readings in Asian-American Studies, Introduction to American Studies, and Ethnicity and Readings in Cultural Studies.
