Top California Universities for Psychology Programs

California has several top-ranked psychology programs at both public and private universities. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked three California universities among the top three psychology graduate schools. The psychology departments at these universities offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, leading toward the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

    • Stanford University's Department of Psychology spans five primary research areas, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, affective science and social psychology. Undergraduate psychology majors work toward the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Undergraduates can also apply to enter a five-year combined bachelor's and master's degree program. Graduate students work toward the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in one of the department's five primary fields.

      In 2009, Stanford University tied with the University of California, Berkeley for first in "U.S. News and World Report" magazine's ranking of psychology graduate schools.
