Princeton University

• Princeton University's department of international relations offers one of the top programs of its kind in the world. The doctoral program takes a multidisciplinary approach and provides students with a diverse mix of courses, depending on the specialty chosen. There are also research opportunities in such fields as politics, economics and sociology. This program is extremely competitive, and accepts fewer than 10 students each year. However, it does provide excellent opportunities for learning, research and close professor-student relationships.

• With world-renowned programs in almost every discipline, Harvard University also offers a prestigious doctoral program in international relations. Like many other schools, Harvard regards international relations as an interdisciplinary field. As such, Harvard students have the opportunity to take courses with some of the world's outstanding experts in multiple areas of political science. Other campus resources, such as the Center for Science and International Affairs and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, offer students a diverse perspective on the field. Students can also take field seminars, where they learn about the day-to-day work of experts in the field.

New York University

• New York University's (NYU) department of political science offers a renowned program in international relations. The goal of this PhD program is to prepare students for research, teaching and hands-on positions in applied settings at premier institutions worldwide. As such, it accepts fewer than 10 students each year, in an effort to focus on strong student/faculty relationships. In the first year, students pursue coursework in theory and analysis; later on, they choose a specialty, eventually culminating in a thesis. One of the advantages that NYU offers its students is full funding---the school guarantees all incoming PhD students a tuition and fellowship stipend for five years.
