How to Write a Bibliography for a Dissertation

Researching and writing a dissertation is a project each Ph.D. student must complete as part of his doctorate program. An important piece of a dissertation is a bibliography. A bibliography is a list of sources used in the research and writing of a piece of literary work. Two style types that are used across a broad range of disciplines exist for creating bibliographies. They are the Modern Language Association (MLA) and The Chicago Manual of Style (or simply "Chicago").

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which style is appropriate for your doctoral field. The doctoral dissertation requirements for your discipline will specify which style to use.

    • 2

Create a bibliographic entry for each book. A bibliographic book entry typically includes these fields: author's name, book title, place of publication, publisher, and year of publication. Depending on which style is used, the book title may be underlined or in italics. The date of publication may come after the book title rather than the end. The use of period, commas and colons differ between the styles; consult your department's style guidelines for specifics.

    • 3

Create a bibliographic entry for computer software, database articles and other such sources you used. A bibliographic software or database entry typically includes these fields: author's name (if applicable), database title, specific entry in the database, online publisher, year of publication and URL of the database entry including when the database was accessed.

    • 4

Create a bibliographic entry for musical scores or songs. This type of entry consists of the artist's name, song title, title of the source (name of the record or full score), editor's and producer's names and year of production.

    • 5

Create a bibliographic entry for any journal articles cited. The entry for a journal article consists of the author(s) names, title of the article, journal name, volume, issue, year and page numbers of the source.
