Bereavement Counselor Certification

A bereavement, or grief, counselor assists individuals with a terminal illness come to terms with their situation and provide support through the dying process. This job also requires the delivery of counseling to those experiencing a significant loss, allowing them to work through the grieving process. It requires extreme care with delicate populations, and is not for everyone.
  1. Prerequisites

    • There are certain degree requirements an individual must meet before becoming certified. Most degrees resulting in medical licenses will meet this requirement. In addition, there are clinical degrees such as psychology and social work which may qualify an individual to take the required coursework leading to certification in bereavement counseling and grief.

    Exceptions

    • There are few exceptions to the requirements for a degree in bereavement counseling or similar field. Some related fields and relative work experiences may qualify an individual to apply for coursework. This evaluation is done on a case-by-case evaluation through the American Institute of Health Care Professional, or AIHCP.

    Required Additional Coursework

    • A total of 100 hours of additional continuing education units, or CEUs, must be taken after meeting the degree or work-life requirements. Classes for certification, also through AIHCP, include: Death, Dying and Mourning, Grief Counseling for the Helping Professional, Grief Therapy and Working with Grieving Children. These classes are available online and guarantee accredited certification education upon completion.
