Term Paper Guidelines

The key to writing a successful term paper is to create a well-organized and thorough outline. Once you have taken the time to write out a thoughtful term paper outline, writing the paper will become much easier.
  1. Outline

    • Writing a good term paper begins by creating an organized outline that helps you construct the flow of your paper and put your ideas in order. Your outline should include the major sections of your paper and the key points for each section.

    Title Page

    • Your title page should include the title of your paper, the course the paper is written for, the date the paper is to be submitted, your name and your student identification number.

    Introduction

    • Your introduction is where you let the reader know what your paper will be about. Begin your introduction broadly by generally introducing the topic, and then quickly narrow down the topic until you reach the end of the paragraph where you introduce your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be clear, concise, and preferably stated within one sentence.

    Body Paragraphs

    • The body paragraphs of the term paper are where you present your arguments in support of your thesis statement. Each paragraph should begin with a clear topic sentence followed by supporting information that leads to a general conclusion about that specific point.

    Conclusion

    • Your final paragraph should draw your paper to a conclusion by restating your thesis statement and then briefly summarizing your key supporting arguments. You should then end the paper with a generalized conclusion that links your thesis statement and its supporting evidence to the topic of interest in general.

    References

    • It is important to provide a reference list for your term paper that lists all of the different sources that provided the information contained within your paper.
