How to Load Autoclaves

Autoclaves sterilize instruments and liquids, and decontaminate biologically hazardous waste through highly pressurized moist heat. The steam produced in the autoclave must circulate around and under the objects to be decontaminated, as well as penetrate liquids and porous material, to be effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the objects to be autoclaved are appropriate to the procedure. Place in the correct autoclave clear or orange bags, or containers. Place the bags in a secondary metal container. Add water to the bags and make sure they will vent.

    • 2

Do not overfill containers or bags. Don't overfill the autoclave and make sure the packaged objects and containers do not touch the walls or top of autoclave interior. Steam must circulate all around the objects. Add the recommended amount of water to the pan in the bottom of autoclave.

    • 3

Use containers to hold all objects, including glass and instruments. Nothing should directly touch the floor of the autoclave.

    • 4

Apply autoclave tape loosely across the tops of jars with liquids. The tape should extend down the sides of the jar.
